13th May // Freed – Day 13 // Freedom From Fear
Reading – Romans 8
When reading Romans 8:15 I was reminded of that song I have sung many times, “No Longer Slaves.” I love the line that says, “I’m no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God.” It’s an incredible line with so much meaning. However, how often do I sing that line but still live as a slave to fear. I still allow those things that cause me anxiety to have a stronger grip on me than the freedom that God wants me to live in, I allow fear to dictate my choices.
Romans 8:15 says, “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again…” This does not mean that when we become Christians we will never be afraid again, but that we don’t have to be slaves to fear. Fear doesn’t get to control us. Through God’s Holy Spirit we can overcome fear and live in his freedom.
You see if we allow fear to control us it will paralyse us from moving forward, reduce us to less than what God created us to be and imprison us, confining us to stay the same. But, if we receive the spirit of adoption we can live in the freedom God has called us to. The message version descries it so well “This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are.”
How freeing would it be to live a life that is not controlled by fear but as a child of God? To live a life of adventure and a life knowing who we are in Christ, a life where each day we choose to bring those things that scare us and give us anxiety to the cross, a life where the words “I am no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.” are not just words we sing but our everyday experience.
So today, despite the challenges and difficulties you are facing, choose to live in the spirit of adoption. Don’t let fear control you.
Choose FREEDOM not fear.
