DAY 4: The Holy Spirit
Read: Matthew 1:18-22
Key Verses: Matthew 1:20-22
…an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet
A most overwhelming thought; prophecy fulfilled as Jesus is now conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit; a beginning in the Holy Spirit.
Then as Jesus becomes a man John says “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ (John 1:32-34) A resting of the Holy Spirit
Then Jesus himself says in Luke 24:49 “now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” A giving of the Holy Spirit.
Old Testament prophecies become New Testament realities so that now the Father’s past promise becomes our present provision.
Through the birth of Jesus we can receive the gift of salvation, a work begun in the Holy Spirit. Then as we pray to be baptized in the Holy Spirit we can walk in the fullness of what God has for us. The Holy Spirit is not an additional extra; He makes the difference in our lives. He is at the beginning of our journey and in every step thereafter. As we walk with Him we will know the joy of the Spirit, the power of the Spirit and the authority of the Spirit.
Is our spiritual life far below what it should be? We need the Spirit of God. The enemy would want us to stay in the darkness but the Holy Spirit can lead us into light. When we are heartbroken or in despair the Holy Spirit is our promised comforter.
The Spirit filled life is not a special deluxe edition of Christianity for the elite or an optional extra; it is part and parcel of the complete plan of God for his people.
