Deep and Wide Day 21 // Building Connection Intentionally

21st May // Connected – Day 21 // Building Connection Intentionally

Reading – Philippians 2

For me ‘connection’ is about linking things or people, it is about sharing a common purpose or experience. A connection may even be the very thing that unites us. When people start to connect with a common purpose and with links that unite us we begin to build community.

We see this throughout scripture. Jesus himself set about picking twelve disciples who would meet together, share together, travel together, laugh together, serve together and even mourn together. The twelve were brought together with Jesus being the main connection. Jesus taught the disciples how to build community by example when He said

even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for manyMatthew 20:28.

This was a clear demonstration from the Lord of how to build connection and community well.

Later the Apostle Paul expands on this in his letters. First Paul addresses the ‘unity’ point “ complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind” Philippians 2:1-2. Paul also writes to the church in Rome and says “ Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” Rom 12:2. He is making the point that our ‘one mind’ is the renewed mind that helps us discern God’s will and know what is good and acceptable while connecting us to the body with shared thought patterns and attitudes.

Paul encourages us to share the same mind but also to share the same love. Writing to the church at Galatia he says, Serve one another in love Galatians 5:13.

So how do we intentionally build connection? Well I think the advice the Apostle Paul gives is a good place to start. We need to make a decision to –

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4

Serve one another with one heart, one mind and sincere love.
