HOW DO I BECOME A CHRISTIAN?

What does it mean to be a Christian?

Before you can become a Christian, it’s helpful to understand what that word really means. The term “Christian” first appeared in the city of Antioch in the first century (The Bible; Acts 11:26). At the time, it may have been used mockingly—literally meaning “little Christ.” But over time, followers of Jesus embraced the name as a badge of honour.

At its core, being a Christian means trusting in Jesus—who He is and what He’s done for us—and, by His grace, seeking to follow Him and live like Him.

Why would I become a Christian?

Jesus once said, “I did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). That raises a big question: why did we need a ransom in the first place?

Think of a ransom as a payment made to set someone free. In our case, Jesus offered His life to rescue us from the hold that sin and death had on us. The Bible says we’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and that sin leads to separation from God (Romans 6:23). But God wasn’t content to leave us there. Jesus, fully God and fully human (John 1:1,14), took our place—dying on the cross to take the punishment we deserved (1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21).

And then He rose again. His resurrection proved that His sacrifice was enough to break the power of sin and death—for everyone (1 John 2:2). That’s how much He loves us.

How can I become a Christian?

Here’s the good news: becoming a Christian isn’t about following a list of rules or performing religious rituals. It’s about starting a personal relationship with Jesus.

God has made the way simple. You become a Christian by placing your trust in Jesus—believing that He died for your sins and that His sacrifice is enough (John 3:16). It’s about trusting in Him alone to save you (John 14:6; Acts 4:12). When you say “yes” to that invitation, you begin a new journey with Him—a life of faith, hope, and love.

Are you ready to take that step?

If you're ready to say yes to Jesus, it starts with trust.

  • Do you believe that you've sinned and need forgiveness?

  • Do you believe that Jesus took your place and paid the price for your sin?

  • Do you believe His death and resurrection are enough to give you new life?

If your answer is yes, then you can receive Jesus right now by putting your trust in Him. It’s that simple—and that life-changing.

You can pray a prayer like this:

“Father God, thank you for sending your Son Jesus to die for me and take the punishment I deserve. I recognise that I am in need of help, hope, forgiveness and a new start. With your help, I turn away from the things I know to be wrong and declare Jesus as my Saviour, the One who has risen from the dead.”
